When you accept payments using a card reader in person, the risk of fraud is much lower than with online credit card transactions. Because of this, our payment processor, Stripe, offers lower processing fees for in-person payments.

Why Are Fees Lower for In-Person Payments?

Stripe reduces processing fees when you use a chip-capable card reader to take payment face-to-face.

  • In-person fees: 2.7% + $0.30 per transaction

  • Online fees: 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction

These fees drop when you're using an approved reader.

How Disputes Are Handled

Merchants using chip-capable readers are not liable for fraudulent-type disputes. These disputes are handled by the card-issuing bank.

  • Your card reader must be chip-capable.

  • You're still responsible for other types of disputes—learn more here.

In-person payments require an active WiFi connection and a supported card reader.
