What Happens When an ACH Payment Fails?

Here is more information about what happens after a failed ACH payment.

Written by Sierra Burton

This feature is available on all Goodshuffle Pro Plans.

ACH Direct Debit transactions can fail at any time after being initiated. Common reasons include:

  • Insufficient funds

  • An invalid account number

  • The customer disabling debits from their bank account

If a client's payment fails:

  • The system will not automatically retry the payment.

  • You will receive an email notification with details.

  • There are no fees for failed payments.

What if my payout already went out before the payment failed?

Because ACH is an asynchronous payment method, it's possible for a payment to fail after it has already been included in a payout.

When this happens:

  • The payment will show as Failed in Goodshuffle Pro, even though the payout shows as Settled.

  • Stripe automatically recovers the funds by deducting the failed payment amount from your next payout.

  • There is no action needed on your end - this is handled automatically by Stripe.

The failed payment will still show a balance due in Goodshuffle Pro. Have your client re-submit payment via their quote link.
